David Goldblatt: Intersections
70 - 80 photographs of the post-Apartheid era

David Goldblatt (b. 1930) lives in Johannesburg. Since 1948 he has been documenting life in South Africa through the medium of photography. In the awareness that the inauguration of the government of Nelson Mandela had ushered in a new era in the country’s history, Goldblatt sought new possibilities of expression. He has now been working in colour for the last six years. With his unique visual language, David Goldblatt is one of the most important representatives of contemporary photography.

The museum kunst palast is exhibiting a new group of works, the “Platteland Intersections”, for which David Goldblatt criss-crossed the South African countryside, his photographs portraying living arrangements in a country whose people are having to totally re-orient themselves in the post-Apartheid era. These pictures are contrasted with the series “Johannesburg Intersections”, which focuses on views of the metropolis. The result is a set of tension-filled constellations between political and real geography, made visible in the transformations of the city and the country, producing a new picture of South Africa in the 21st century.
